MEDIA BUZZ: Michael Winfrey

Michael Winfrey is Economics Correspondent from Central Europe and the Balkans, for Thomson Reuters News, overseeing economic and markets coverage for the region.

He joined Reuters in 1998 in Panama and has since reported from 18 countries, including assignments in southern Lebanon during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war and in Athens during Greece’s economic crisis and emergency bailout last year. Following a brief stint in the Czech Republic in 1999, he moved to Slovakia to cover its emergence from a status of diplomatic pariah to that of an economic success story and eventual European Union member. He then moved to Sofia in 2004 to write about Bulgaria’s struggle to win EU membership in 2007 despite doubts from the bloc’s older members over high levels of corruption and organized crime.

In 2007, Michael moved to London to work as an editor on the Reuters World Desk. He has been in his current post since 2008, based in Prague. He speaks Czech, Slovak and Spanish.
